Here at NAVExperts, we’re committed to helping you and your business find the best business management solution.

At Microsoft HQ, the winds are ever-changing, and over recent months it feels like there have been more additions to their products than ever.

In this blog post, we’re going to focus on the two most popular accounting solutions on the market, Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics 365.

What is Microsoft Dynamics NAV?

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is a market leading business management solution designed specifically for mid-sized organisations. It’s an on-premise application, with the additional option of hosting in the cloud – both public and private.

What is Microsoft Dynamics 365?

Released in 2016, Dynamics 365 is available as a purely SaaS (Software as a Service) offering, meaning it’s paid for on a monthly subscription, with a core module that additional modules can be added to, as and when needed. Dynamics 365 is perfect for smaller, growing businesses.

When to choose Dynamics NAV

As Dynamics NAV is available as an on-premise solution, businesses who want to run the software on their servers will find that NAV is the way to go.

If you’re looking to further develop the solution down the road, you’ll find that there is the option to go directly into the source code and make any custom changes. As D365 is cloud-based, this is not an option. However, should you wish, configuration is available for both.

If your business requires a solution that takes care of manufacturing and warehousing as well as core financial functions, then right now, NAV is what you’ll be looking at to take care of this.

When to choose Dynamics 365

First off, D365 will speak to the needs of smaller businesses looking for a lower cost solution. With D356 there are no upfront software costs, only monthly payments.

Dynamics 365 is a plug-and-play solution, meaning no potential server related problems. Microsoft sends updates through the cloud on a regular basis. NAV requires you to purchase the latest option to get the latest updates.

A possible deal breaker between NAV and D365 is the allocation of additional users. With NAV, when you need more users, you buy them outright, even though you may not use them all, all the time. With D365 however, you can add and remove users quickly, scaling up and down, saving time and money.

Neither solution is better or worse than the other, just better suited to the needs of your business.

What’s on the horizon?

Microsoft is imminently about to announce their newest release, codenamed project “Tenerife”. Tenerife will allow users who need the capabilities of NAV to move over to the cloud.

We wait with bated breath to see what’s in store in the Microsoft spring 2018 release.
